I Am . . .

I want to get to know my students a little better, or at least give them a chance to develop a mutual understanding with me about where we come from. This is a real simple activity that someone in my class pointed out. It i called an “I Am” poem. Here is my shot at it:

I am witty and shy

I wonder how the universe started

I hear a tree falling in the woods

I see the clock ticking

I want to be a good leader

I am witty and shy

I pretend that I’m an NBA superstar

I feel warm clothes right out of the dryer

I touch the grainy sand between my toes

I worry that some people neglect their feelings

I cry because my brother is a lost talent

I am witty and shy

I understand that we all can learn from each other

I say that my restlessness is my nemesis

I dream to one day know what is more important: the question or the answer

I try to do the unusual

I hope to teach others

I am witty and shy

Aw!! I did this exact poem for a class assignment in 2002. Anyways, your entry inspired me to revisit it and write an updated one 10 years later. Comparing them, it’s eerie how much has stayed the same, like my 2002 one was “I am sensitive and optimistic”, my 2012 one “I am hiding and searching”.

I also noticed that each line seems to play off of each other and add more meaning to the last @_@
